Pickle Jar

‘Rice is brilliantly relatable’ ★★★★★ EdFest Mag

About the show

It’s hard keeping it together when your whole life is falling apart. The pressures of teaching, Tinder and outrageous Irish best mates are a lot to juggle, especially when you’re stumbling through the maze of trying to be a grown-up.

Pickle Jar explores the grey areas surrounding guilt, grief and shame and how we react to them in modern culture.

Stranger danger, heartbreak and piña coladas are on the syllabus in the hilarious debut play by Maddie Rice.

Development & further life

Pickle Jar was developed as part of the Soho Theatre Writers’ lab, and with the help of Katie Pesskin.

It had two readings at Cockpit New Stuff, previewed at 2NorthDown, Canal Cafe Theatre and Theatre 503, before doing Edinburgh Fringe in 2019.

It transferred to Soho Theatre for a 3 week run the same year.

It was also developed for TV by Apple TV and NBC universal, although it didn’t get green lit in the end, it lead to many other TV writing opportunities for Maddie.

The Pickle Jar play script was published by Samuel French/Concord and is available to buy.
